I think it would definitely be a good idea to at least send wheat along if you are asking an ally to house your troops for a while. If it turns out you can't use or cover all of your resources with crannies then send the excess along as well. It's always best to let the attacker get nothing. Giving resources at risk to an ally at least keeps them in the family. Even if they overflow his storage and go to waste, it's still better than letting an attacker have them.
